My 1st Graders At-Home Virtual Learning Area

Writer: VeliaVelia

Along with the pandemic of COVID-19, came a lot of parents thrown into having their kids at home for virtual learning. I was one of those parents. With my oldest going into 1st grade, it was important to ensure that I set her up for success in this unfortunate circumstance.

In order to make sure my daughter felt she had an area dedicated to school free from distractions and engaging enough to keep her focused, I had to find somewhere in our home to create her own "learning corner". Our home is far from huge, so we had to do some rearranging and decided to create this small space on our second floor of our cape cod landing.

The desk is very basic with one drawer that is able to hold all of the supplies on her list for 1st grade including crayons, markers, glue, pencils, and more. I grabbed some basic bins to keep her supplies organized and within reach. This small bins also allow her to grab a bin and take it to another area of the house if and when needed. Sometimes she likes to work on the floor or may come down to the kitchen table if she needs some company while she does some of her work pages. It's very convenient.

On the walls I added a cork board, positive quote posters, her class schedule, a dry erase board calendar, and a analogue clock. The cork board is used mainly to hang some of the work she is most proud of on as they do in a regular classroom. I also keep items that she may need to refer to during the day like passwords for some of her sites. The calendar I like to fill out at the beginning of each month and write on it when she is in the classroom and when she is virtual as well as when there are days

off or special events happening both in and out of school. Her class schedule shows what time her different classes are with reference to the analogue clock as my 1st grader isn't fluent in telling time on this kind of clock yet. On her desk I also provided a digital clock so she can check herself and ensure she is reading the clock correctly.

Some extras that I included in the area was a storage bin next to the desk for flash cards, white boards, and other items. I have organizing bins on top for her leveled readers for when she has free read and for her folders and workbooks. It's also encouraged to have manipulatives for math like counting block or what we have, the abacus. She uses it all the time to help with math and it's fun for play as well.

One item that is overlooked is a chair that is child sized. The chair should allow the child to sit at a good height at the desk to view and use the computer without issue. I love the chair we got because the height adjusts and it is kids size so she can sit all the way back in it without slouching as she has nice back support.

Overall this space has created a great area for my daughter to focus and learn during the days she is home virtual learning. I haven't felt like any of the items were unnecessary or that there was anything missing from her space to help her engage in her online lessons. She loves her space, and while it isn't as great as going to school, she finds it comforting to have her own space for school right at home.
